In the midst of the pandemic especially in the face of uncertainties of a new wave of contagion in the island, the Parish of Saint Dominic in Kaohsiung celebrated its patronal feast with the traditional triduum and solemn mass on 9 August. This year, the feast coincides with the 58 anniversary of the foundation of the Parish. This was founded by the former Vicar Apostolic of Kaohsiung, Msgr. Jose Arregui OP, who after resigning from his post, decided to come and evangelize the northern district of the city behind the city train station and to form a Christian community there.

The parish was built beside the Central House of the Dominican missions on the island, and thus it has been cared by the friars assigned to the house and the parish community is intimated linked to the life of the mission and the friars.

On the first day of the triduum, the preacher was Fr. Luis Angel Cuadrado, superior of the Holy Cross House of Pingtung; for the second day, it was Fr. Jose Ignacio Moronta, superior Saint Dominic House of Kaohsiung. The third day, which is the proper day of the Saint, the bishop of Kaohsiung, Msgr. Peter Liu came to preside the mass.

The Solemn Mass of the feast day on Sunday was presided by the Parish Priest: Fr. Jarvis Sy. After the masses and the nourishing homilies of the preachers, the faithfully offered votive candles before the image of Saint Dominic and the traditional “supplica” to the holy Patron which is based on the famous text of B. Jordan of Saxony was solemnly recited by a Christian representing the community. As where was no common celebration at the national level for the Dominican family, the friars of the mission were convoked by the Superior of the mission for Eucharistic and fraternal agape at the Central House.
